Description: Join Paul Rice, Founder of FairTrade USA, for a discussion on “what it takes” to scale the social venture. Paul Rice continues to challenge the status quos, now asking – should fair trade be restricted to small farmers alone? While Fair Trade began in the 1940s, it accelerated in the U.S. when Haas alum, Paul Rice, founded Fair Trade USA (originally known as TransFair USA) in 1998, and launched Fair Trade Certified coffee at the Speciality Coffee Association of America exposition. Fair Trade USA has now grown as a certifier of a broad range of products, including but not limited to, chocolate, apparel, tea and honey.
Paul Rice, Haas alum (’96), has been recognized as an Ashoka Fellow (2009), as Fast Company’s Social Capitalist for four consecutive years, and as a SKOLL Foundation entrepreneur. FairTrade USA promotes a market model that guarantees agricultural producers a fair price for their products, direct trade and access to credit and support for sustainable agriculture.
Dr. Jennifer Walske is an adjunct professor of entrepreneurship within the Lester Center for Entrepreneurship, and serves as the faculty director of the Global Social Venture Competition. She publishes research on how human capital, social capital, and strategy aids emergent firms. Prior to a career in academia, Dr. Walske was a nationally ranked analyst by Institutional All American and a frequent commentator on both CNN and CNBC.
